I’ve had these on my car for 10 years, but they were part of the Ontario batch that were poorly laminated. For non-Ontarians, our boring-ass license plates are basically plastic-wrapped steel plates and my old plates (started with BEZK, and all early B-series plates seem to be fucked). My last trip through the car wash finally punched a hole clear through the plastic laminate. When I finally took the plates off my car and slid it out from the dealer plate frame (which is now removed) the plastic sheet peeled right off. It turns out the plate frame was really keeping the laminate “stuck” to the steel plate.

Anyways, the new ones are squeaky clean (new C-series plates). I asked the lady how long these would last and she simply said she doesn’t know but time would tell.

Luckily, despite the fact that the Ontario government website says that plates would only be replaced free after 5 years (my plates are around 10 years old) I managed to get out having lost $0.

So do you have to renew registration every year? How much extra is the physical plate? Just curious cause here in Michigan we renew every year, but new physical plates only cost something like $5-7. I’ve been replacing my plates every year and keeping the old plates for my “collection.” I have a plate for every year and car that I’ve driven. I never understood folks hanging onto old plates to the point they delaminate. I can see it if they are pricey to replace, but if their not, why bother? I realize most folks aren’t as neurotic as I am, so to each their own.

Replacement plates are $59. Not bad, but not worth it to get new plates.

On top of that, registration/plate renewal is $120/yr, and it goes up pretty much every year, so if you can afford it the 2-yr renewal makes more sense. Naturally, the government doesn’t give you a discount so it’s $240 total for 2 years.

Luckily, my plates were part of a batch with known defects so I guess it was free, despite the website saying the manufacturer warranty is only 5 years.

Anyways, the new plates look great on my freshly washed car so I’m glad I got it done.

I should’ve taken a pic of my old plates since they were completely fucked. I’m the kind of guy who thinks about taking a photo of my awesome looking food after I’ve eaten most/all of it, though.

This is pretty much what happened to my old plate:

When I slide the plate out of the dealer frame, the whole laminate sheet lifted off the plate. The front plate was in better condition since all the letters were stuck, but it was one car wash away from being a bare sheet of steel since the laminate had cracked around all the embossed lettering.

Oh wow! I see why I see so many Ontario plates that look so raggedy around here. I don’t think I’d swap for $60 each year. I think Indiana tags are just printed on plastic. That seems to be a better solution, especially for places that use so much salt in the winter.

Glad yours worked out for you then.

It’s not just early B-plates that are affected, they’re all shit. My October 2014 BVVM plates are already starting to delaminate around the characters. I hope and expect that later B-plates will be included in that coverage at some point.

Your plates were replaced for free because early B-plates had the warranty extended because they’re all affected. My brother had the 2009 plates on my old Mazda3 replaced a year or so ago too.

I’ve thought about getting a set of custom plates for my car but the high cost and likelyhood of them having the same problem have stopped me for now.

I hope your C-plates are better.

I was looking into personalized plates as well and the cost is just absurd for them in ON.

Anyways, if my new plates begin to delaminate within 5 years I’m just going to keep bringing them back to be swapped.
